Over-Painting

Übermalung (Over-Painting) is a performative video work developed from archival film material of the Hamburg State Teachers Institute (LI). Historical footage — including the unveiling of the Bismarck monument and scenes from early art education classes — was edited into looping forward and reverse movements, causing gestures and actions to continuously repeat, dissolve and reappear.

The video was projected onto a classroom blackboard and filmed again while three performers intervened directly within the projection using chalk drawings and physical gestures. Following live directions, the performers repeatedly entered the image, overlaying and temporarily transforming the archival material through marks, erasures and movement.

Combining projection, performance and sound, the work explored different temporal layers between historical image material, live action and the fragile immediacy of chalk drawing — creating a constantly shifting relation between moving image and temporary inscription.
