Axis is a score-based performance in which a sensor-equipped sculpture functions as a physical interface. Movements upon the sculpture control the instruments‘ sound parameters in real time, while spatial relationships between the performers organize the musical structure. Specific states—determined, for instance, by the body’s orientation in space—open or close predefined fields of action, extending even to moments of ad libitum. Movement thus becomes the structuring principle of sound, while sound, in turn, organizes the perception of space.
