Neo-Rhythm, 2025, duration variable

Part of Performative Symposium

Neo-Rhythmus is a score-based performance for microphone, sampler and remote control. Using a wireless microphone and an 8-track sampler programmed with delayed recording processes, the work explores rhythm as a shifting relation between speech, movement and algorithmic fragmentation.

Whenever one of the performers activates the remote control, the sampler records fragments of spoken language for a predetermined duration. As the performers move through space in a dynamic interplay of pursuit, coordination and interruption, neither timing nor speech can be fully controlled. Recorded fragments overlap, reappear at different speeds and merge into distorted sequences in which new words and accidental neologisms begin to emerge.

Through the sampler’s internal rhythmic structure, language becomes unstable and partially autonomous — continuously oscillating between communication, repetition and algorithmic transformation.
